Every muse leaves behind a frequency. For Spring 2027, Bibhu Mohapatra listens for that of Marchesa Luisa Casati — the most bewitching eccentric of the early twentieth century, a woman who treated the world as her canvas and its cultures as her palette. She gave herself as muse to movements from Futurism to Surrealism. And she moved, with breathtaking ease, between the uncanny and the sublime — a woman who did not simply attend history, but transmitted it.
Spring 2027 Story
The palette follows the Marchesa into full saturation, blending soft pastels like candy-floss pink, blush, and ivory with bold greens, shimmering silver and gold. Like stepping into an Italian rose garden, pieces are accented by bold marigold, vivid watercolor florals, blacks, crisp whites, and flashes of indigo denim.
Couture drape meets theatrical volume. Sleeves billow and gather at the wrist, high necklines frame the face like a portrait collar, and skirts are cut to move. Where the eye should linger, the proportions are generous. Each shape is designed for an entrance, and for being remembered after it.
Ikat silks from Odisha carry the collection's most personal thread. Their threads are resist-dyed before weaving, which gives the pattern the soft, blurred edge that no print can reproduce. Against them, ivory lace flowers are outlined in fine cord, and their fringed edges are left soft against the crepe. Satins with real weight hold the eveningwear, catching light along every fold of the drape.
Surface is where the collection is at its most unrestrained, as Casati was. Beaded tendrils climb sheer tulle in trailing sprays of leaves. Mirrored sequins and crystals are set in an exact star lattice. Oversized paillettes overlap like scales and ripple with each step. Slender beaded vines run the length of a sleeve, then burst into stars across satin. Every piece is placed to catch light and move with the body.
Casati set out to be a living work of art and spent her life making it true. Spring 2027 is Mohapatra's tribute to her, and to every woman who treats dressing as authorship. Across cultures and centuries, the collection carries her refusal to be ordinary, rendered in silk, lace, and light.
